Case study selected:
Client A is a male Ultra distance runner: 39 years; Height 169cm; Weight 67.5kg. He competes twice a year in 100km races, as well as several 50km races as race preparation. Currently he is training for a 100km race which he hopes to complete in less than 10 hours. His weekly training consists of 3 x 25km runs; 1 x 40km run; 1 x 60km run and 3 x 10km recovery runs.

• Select one of the athlete case-studies and construct a set of nutritional guidelines for the athlete to follow. These will be a set of broad recommendations for them to follow on a daily basis, as well as a specific set of guidelines and food choices for a competition day.
• Identify the nutritional needs of athletes on a daily basis to support their training needs (Energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat).
• Justify your diet recommendations in terms of the nutritional importance of each aspect to the sports person.
• Make reference to published research and literature throughout

The report needs to include:
1. Energy: calculate the average daily energy expenditure of the athlete. This needs to factor in RMR and training energy cost, and be provided as an average for the 7 days, not daily values (all calculations and equations should be placed into an appendix). Implications of a positive and negative energy balance for performance should be outlined.
2. Macronutrient requirements. Carbohydrate, protein and fat needs. Consider the fuel requirements for training and provide the values for each macronutrient as an average daily intake for the 7 days, not separate daily values (all calculations and equations should be placed into an appendix). Outline the function and importance of each macronutrient in the diet. State the quantity (grams) of each macronutrient required daily. Make sure the total amount of a 3 macronutrients adds up to an energy balance (i.e. total kcal from the 3 macronutrients should add up to your predicted daily energy expenditure). Provide a practical application of the theory by suggesting a range of foods to consume in order to meet the macronutrient requirements. This does not need to be in the form of a detailed daily menu, but should provide a range of suitable food sources for each of the 3 macronutrients. These food choices can be placed into tables, figures or graphical displays if deemed appropriate.
3. Competition day nutrition: provide detailed set of guidelines to meet the nutritional fuelling needs of the athlete: before, during and after a competition. Complete the table below and insert into your assignment. This table should be accompanied by theoretical text and supporting literature to justify the information in your table.

4. Fluid and electrolyte loss and replacement. Consider the fluid needs on a daily basis and include fluid intake in the competition day plan. This information may be included in earlier sections, in which case there is no need to repeat yourself (just make sure this topic is covered).
• Tables will not be included in the word count. It is permissible to use tables to provide food choices and quantity guidelines (for each of the macronutrients). However, the information in the tables must be justified in the text accompanying the tables.
