Presidential Memo, you are addressing the president directly.
A. Find out about (and cite in your paper) Trump’s specific positions or general
orientations in foreign policy, so that you can be clear with him where you think he should
change and where not to change. *For evidence of Trump’s stated positions or preferences,
you may cite current official sources (e.g. White House website or national Republican
Party website), official sources from the 2016 Trump campaign, or reputable news
organizations (i.e. Reuters, Guardian, Atlantic, Foreign Affairs).*
B. Determine which readings from this semester are relevant to your topic, whether
by supplying essential historical context for understanding the US role in the world or basic
concepts for understanding the problems that you address.
C. Identify a limited number (three or four) of outside readings that will deepen your
knowledge of the topic and/or the president. *Don’t use any source outside the pre-
approved list (i.e. Reuters, Guardian, Atlantic, Foreign Affairs) without asking permission
from the instructor beforehand.*
D. Explain specifically what your candidate needs to know about two things: ends
and means. Ends are the goals or interests that USA has in any given situation; means are
tools or policies that seem likely to advance those ends. Your advice cannot be fully
defended without addressing both goals and tools.

Use 12-point font.
Plan to write between 10 and 15 pages, not including the title page or list of
references, and double-check that your word count is between 3,000 and 4,000.
Use parenthetic citations in author-date format. For your outside sources (not
already on the syllabus), this means you must provide full bibliographic information
