Professionalism and Ethics

Discuss about Professionalism and Ethics…………………

Living wage

A living wage is a wage that will enable a full time employee to have a descent standard of living. A living wage in the US will significantly vary from a living wage in other countries depending on the cost of living in a country. The variations in living wages may be determined by a number of social, political and economic factors within a particular country.

Since the factors which determine living wages solely depends on social, economic and political situations of a country Companies in the United states of America has no ethical obligation to ensure that workers receive what the United states of America consider as a living wage.

Company size also determines a living wage for workers. Large companies will have a better living wage than small companies hence it will not be ethically right for companies to determine a uniform  living wage.

A Living wage should be judged by the standard of the host country. This is because countries do have different cost of living, resources and labor laws. Due to the facts that the factors that determine a Living wage in other countries are not always the same as those of the United States of America, it will be inappropriate for the USA to judge a living wage.

In conclusion, the minimum wage is very essential and it should be enforced and judged by the host country due to their different social, economic and political environments.

Bribe

A bribe can be defined as anything given or promised in order to influence the conduct of person. It can be in form of money, valuable or favor. Bribe corrupts the behavior or conduct of a person in a position of trust. As a result of this it erodes the moral values of individuals and often leads bad decision making by persons in position of trust.

Bribery should not be accepted by US companies in other countries even if it is acceptable in the host country. Since bribery is a form of corruption and it is illegal in US, US companies in other countries should not accept the bribe as it will erode the ethical values of the US.

US companies has the ethical obligation to ensure that all workers comply with US law when working outside the country. This is because US companies a broad should serve the interest of the US government and act as ambassadors of the US ethical values in their respective host countries. Failure by the US companies to comply with the US law will serve as bad example to the host country, eventually losing trust in US policies and decisions.

During my work with US firm in Kenya, I had the privileged to be paid in US dollars as opposed to Kenya Shillings which other Kenyan firms were using to pay their employees. The firm was Jacobs and Associates was contracted for a period of time and as other US firms they opted to pay as in US Dollars. Since as a Kenyan I was expecting to be paid in Kenya Shillings which is the standard required in Kenya hence to be paid in US dollars was actually of higher standard than was required in this given situation.

Nepotism

Nepotism can be defined as favoritism shown on the basis of family relationship. The favoritism can be in business, politics or employment. It therefore means that only persons who have family relationships with a person in a position of influence in a given country or organization can get employment, engage in business or politics in that particular organization or country.

Nepotism is a bad thing in any given organization or country due to the following reasons;

It creates unfair competition in a given country or organization since the rest of the population who has no relationship with a person in authority have no chance to compete with the relatives of those in position of influence.

Nepotism exposes the organization to problems of family fighting, sibling rivalry over managerial position and improper combination of family and business in decision making.

Nepotism also lowers morale for those who supervise relatives of those who are in position of influence for fear of victimization.

Nepotism also contributes to in equalities in the distribution of a country resources and wealth. This will increase the gap between the poor and the rich in the country.

In the real life neither I nor someone I know has been involved in nepotism. Again I have never encountered specific person in my reading who was involved in nepotism.

Professional or Ethical issues

I will not accept bribes from any person(s); this will help me maintain my integrity and transparency in my work and help me develop my career further.

I will abide by the law of my country: This will enable me to be respect the sovereignty of my country and gain respect from my country.

I will advocate for a minimum wage: By doing these I will improve the welfare of individuals by reducing the wage gap within a particular country hence help in improving the welfare of individuals.

I will fight and avoid all forms of corruption: This will ensure my accountability, and ensure that our resources are used effectively.

I will fight against any form of discrimination: This will ensure that all individuals are given fair chance and resources distributed equitably in our society.
