In HW 4, you will be writing an essay, incorporating at least 5 pieces of information from your sources.
Reference Material:
You can get a quick review by looking at the Quick Research Guide in the Appendix: A-20 in your text (orange-colored edges).

Below I have also included a link to the Diana Hacker pdf file and page numbers to the Research section (brown page edges) of our textbook.

At our Bb site, from the Homepage, go to the Course Menu on the left side. Under Study Tools, select Research.

As you write, remember to:
Create your Works Cited page first. Doing your Works Cited first will make it easier for you to do your in-text or parenthetical citations as explained below.

Remember that the Works Cited is in alphabetical order by the author or the first word of the article’s title if there is no author.

Follow MLA Works Cited format. Review this concept in your text.

Use in-text or parenthetical information appropriately. As you have 2 sources, it is essential that your readers know which piece of evidence comes from which of your two sources. You MUST document each piece of borrowed material.

Remember what the books says about Launch – Capture – Cite.

Follow MLA in-text (parenthetical) format.

Be sure that your essay sounds fluid–not as if you just plopped in borrowed material.

Keep essay focused. You are not writing a major research essay here–just an essay with research. Your final essay should be 2-3 pages in length, not counting the Works Cited that should appear on a separate page.

HW 4: Follow This Essay Structure
Introductory Paragraph
Grab readers with an enticing hook, perhaps a statistic or a quote.
Introduce “The Case Against Grades” article by including the name, author, and website name.
State your thesis clearly and emphatically. (Note: Omit phrases like “I think, I believe, I feel….”)
Body Paragraphs (The specific number of body paragraphs will depend upon your selected organizational structure, but you should have a minimum of two body paragraphs.)
Each paragraph will have a specific focus stated as a topic sentence.
Each paragraph will be developed with specific reasons and evidence (your own and that from research). You will cite each piece of borrowed material from your research according to the MLA format.
Concluding Paragraph
This paragraph will reinforce your position.
This paragraph will provide a sense of closure. (Consider referring to your opening in some way to unify your essay.)
Works Cited page
This page will list your two sources, the one I gave you by MIchael Thomsen and the one you found in HW 3.
Each entry should follow the specific format based on the MLA 8th edition. Check out links listed above as well as references in “Research” in our Bb course.
When you finish your concluding paragraph, hit Enter. Then go to Insert, Page Break so that your WC will be on its own page

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
