Journal: Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

This week you will complete a “Who Are You?” exercise to help understand the difference between self-concept and self-esteem. To complete the activity:

Set a timer for 3 minutes
During the 3 minutes, write down as many answers as you can to the question “Who are you?”
When the 3 minutes is up, review your list and highlight any nouns you have included.

The nouns you have listed relate to your self-concept (who you understand yourself to be); other terms relate to your self-esteem (how you feel about who you are).
Reflect on your list and answer the following questions:

How does your self-concept and self-esteem impact your views on communication?
What aspects of your self-perception impact your role as a student?
How does understanding yourself help you to be a more effective communicator and a more successful student?
